Arrive UK Students at Southampton
On 14 July 2008, students who participated in our five-week, online
Arrive UK course arrived in Southampton
to start their Pre-sessional Course in English for Academic
Purposes. All of the students are preparing to begin degree
courses at the University of Southampton from October, and
come from all corners of the globe, including: Greece, Colombia,
Iran, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, China.
Meeting e-tutors and online classmates
The Arrive UK course lasts for five weeks and helps prepare students for life in the UK and Southampton, and for study at a British university. The course provides opportunities for 'live' chat sessions in the chatroom and topic-related discussion using the discussion board, so students have been getting to know each other long before getting on their planes to the UK! On arriving at Southampton, students had an opportunity to meet their e-tutors and their Arrive UK classmates in person for the first time, at a Welcome Party for all new students.

Student comments:
“It was really beneficial to me. By means of Arrive UK I learned many things about British culture, cost of living, studying in the UK, and many, many useful other things. When I arrived in Southampton everything was familiar to me and I didn't feel alone.”
“It was brilliant!”
“I can get a lot of information about Southampton from doing the POPC course. For example, I need to know the price of the commodities and consider whether I should bring something which I can't buy in Southampton.”
“Thank you very much I enjoy(ed) it a lot. Cheers!!!”
The Arrive UK online course has been running successfully for four years, preparing future University of Southampton students prior to their arrival in the UK.
