Developing Online Learning Materials as RLOs

We are also currently developing online learning materials in study skills, for other languages besides English, and also subject-specific learning material. These are in the form of reusable Learning Objects (RLOs). We have collaborated with Health Sciences to provide customised study skills material, and have produced online activities in law, biological sciences, and on topics such as employability, dyslexia and personal tutoring.

If you would like support in developing learning materials in languages or other subjects using eLanguages templates and support materials, please email elang1@soton.ac.uk. We also engage in other collaborative development projects, such as HUMLO.

Some examples of these learning materials are below. You will need Adobe Flash Player (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/) installed to view these, and headphones or speakers in some cases.

The RLOs produced by eLanguages combine multi-media assets with an activity-based approach to learning. RLOs are the 'building blocks' for online courses and resource sets (toolkits). Key features of the pedagogic design of the LOs are that:

  • they are activity-led
  • they combine different media
  • the activities encourage reflection and 'learning by doing'
  • several activities build on each other
  • feedback (examples, answers, explanations, review) supports students' learning
  • they aim to accommodate different ways of using and learning
