The Study Skills Toolkit for
Health Sciences students

"Students voluntarily used them so they must be good!"

The Study Skills Toolkit for Health Sciences has been in use at the University of Southampton since 2005.

We have produced an online Study Skills learning resource to support and enhance undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Health Sciences. It was developed in collaboration with Health Sciences at the University of Southampton and is currently being used by their cohort of over 3000 students and tutors.

About the toolkit

Students studying

Content and examples are drawn from contexts directly relevant to Health Sciences, and include subject-specific learning tasks. Learners will find guided activities, feedback, answers, hints and comments, links to reference materials, study tools and related internet sites. A tutors’ guide is provided.

Designed to complement face to face teaching, these high-quality activity-based multimedia materials are interactive and web-based and are enhanced by the use of audio and Flash animation. They are designed for use in a range of different modes: open and blended learning; or in a classroom or computer workstation. They are useful for all courses of study, from Foundation Year to PhD programmes.

The resource gives access to over 75 individual sessions of online learning activity (learning objects) which are designed to take on average 45 minutes each providing for at least 60+ hours of study. They focus on five key academic skill areas:

  • learning skills
  • academic writing
  • reading and critical thinking
  • academic speaking, listening and note-taking
  • aspects of academic language
